Tuition as my Education: What is my tuition doing for me?
In exchange for this slab of metal (1152 toonies in one semester) or stack of paper (621 bills in the next semester), each one being 1/8 of what I have decided to surrender (8 consecutive semesters) to NSCAD University, I get another slip of paper with my name on it; a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
As a single unit, each domination” isn’t much, but the series as a whole makes up one semesters tuition
- which in my eyes is a lot.
It’s an investment; I’ll earn it all back in the first year that I am out in the “real world” … right?
… well maybe not. But, I am sure about a few things I can say helped me grow and put trust into my future.
I have met intriguing people, have been introduced to new processes, concepts and ideas, and have learned far more then just the subject within the classroom/studio; because of the space the institution has created. I’ve learned to question, think critically, independently and collectively on a certain subject. Sometimes it seems like the material of a class would never fit into my life outside of University, so it seems pointless. I realized the subject and content can change once we have learned how to think around it and approach it. We learn how to learn, think critically and explore within a given subject. It’s the skills and the people I learn with, from and about that inspire me, and get me thinking in new ways. Seeing the world in a different light, and encouraging me to express these understandings through different mediums. Here I learn the skills that allow me to produce a physical piece of work, based off of a series of intangible thoughts and emotions ...or synchronized brain waves, and firing neurons.
I guess that’s worth more than just paper for paper.
